Nauscopio · History and Economy

Documentary analyses of historical and economic processes. Every report separates what is confirmed, what is observed, and what remains a matter of interpretation.

Catalogue of the economic history reports published on nauscopio.blogspot.com. Each entry links to the full report, where every claim is labeled by its level of evidence (CONFIRMED, OBSERVED, CALCULATED, PROBABLE, DEBATE, ND). The methodology section at the end of this index explains it in detail.

Quick orientation

How it is organized. For now, one historical-economic report is available: the analysis of the Nazi «economic miracle,» which examines the 1933-1939 recovery, the financing mechanisms of rearmament (MEFO bills), autarky, price controls, and imperial exploitation. Further works on economic history and documentary analysis will be added in due course.

Economic history

Reports that reconstruct economic processes of the past from primary sources, statistical series, and historiographical debate. Every claim is labeled according to its documentary support.

The Nazi «Miracle»: Recovery, Mobilization, and Exploitation

A documentary reconstruction of the Third Reich's economy. It examines whether the 1933-1939 recovery was a «miracle» of efficiency or an authoritarian mobilization that subordinated consumption, labor, and private property to rearmament. It analyses off-budget financing through MEFO bills, the Four-Year Plan, autarky, Preisstopp, and imperial exploitation, with explicit historiographical debate (Overy, Tooze, Ritschl, Aly, Bel) and every claim labeled by its evidence.

How to read these reports

Every claim in these reports carries a label according to its level of evidence. Distinguishing them allows observation, documentation, calculation, and historiographical interpretation to be kept apart.

LabelMeaningExample
CONFIRMEDFigure published in a primary source or verifiable official document.MEFO was founded with 1 million RM in capital.
OBSERVEDDirectly visible in period photographs or documents. The evolution of registered unemployment between 1932 and 1939.
CALCULATEDResult of a formula applied to known data. The percentage of GDP represented by military spending.
PROBABLEReasonable economic or historical inference, pending further verification. The fall in per capita consumption in certain periods.
DEBATEHistoriographical interpretation in dispute among specialists.Götz Aly's thesis on plunder and welfare.
NDNot determinable with current evidence. The exact series of real hourly wages in 1939.
General rule. No claim should be read as a settled fact unless it carries the label CONFIRMED, OBSERVED, or CALCULATED. The rest are inferences, interpretations, or working hypotheses.
Why it matters. In economic history, the same data point can support opposing interpretations. Labeling each claim forces its source to be declared and prevents a hypothesis from being read as a definitive conclusion.
